St John's College

On 31 October 2025, around 30 Old Johannians from the Class of 1975 gathered at The Johannian Club for an evening of laughter, reconnection, and reflection. The turnout would have been closer to forty-five were it not for a number of overseas-based classmates who were unable to travel due to new legislation requiring South African citizens to enter and exit the country on a valid South African passport.

The reunion was expertly organised and hosted by Clive Murphy, the 1975 Head of School, with invaluable assistance from Zelda Siphenuka. Together, they not only tracked down many former classmates but also coordinated a wonderful event that began with welcome drinks on The Johannian Club Terrace.

Guests were then treated to a fascinating guided tour of the school, led by current students who shared insights into the buildings, statues, and rich history of the campus. The tour also showcased the many impressive additions and improvements that have taken place over the past five decades—many of which were new to the attendees. Along the way, old memories were rekindled, stories retold, and a few long-kept secrets finally confessed.

After the tour, everyone reconvened at the Club, where many were joined by their partners. The evening continued with welcoming remarks from Clive Murphy, followed by several addresses, including one by Graham Kerr-Phillips, Chairman of the Old Johannian Association. Heartfelt tributes were also paid to the many classmates who have sadly passed on over the years.

A superb three-course dinner followed, accompanied by lively conversation, laughter, and the joy of rediscovered friendship. Many old bonds were renewed—some after as long as fifty years—and the celebrations carried on late into the night in the Boar’s Head Bar.

The Old Johannian Club proved to be the perfect venue for such a memorable occasion and comes highly recommended—not only for Old Johannians seeking a welcoming place to dine but also as a comfortable and nostalgic stay for those visiting Johannesburg.
