Michael George Lyme 'Gus' Mills (Alston 1963), who died on 12 July 2026, was one of Africa's foremost authorities on wild carnivores. His four decades of fieldwork in the Kalahari and Kruger reshaped how South Africa's national parks are managed, and his writing and photography brought that work to a far wider audience than science alone could reach. An Old Johannian of the class of 1963, he was awarded the College's Golden Eagle Award in 2023.
This July marks 110 years since the Battle of Delville Wood. To commemorate this, the Speaker of the City of Johannesburg, the South African Legion, the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH) and the South African Delville Wood Commemorative Museum Trust invited representatives from the College to lay a wreath for those who fell during the battle.
St John's College and the Old Johannian Association are proud to announce the recipients of the 2026 Golden Eagle Award, conferred on two deserving Old Johannians on Gaudy Day in recognition of the extraordinary impact they have made in South Africa and internationally.

One hundred years ago today, the War Memorial Chapel at St John's College was dedicated. It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Bruce Brammer Chalmers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on Tuesday, 26 May 2026. Bruce entered St John's College in 1984 and quickly became one of the most accomplished Johannian sportsmen of his era.
The Easter term began on a high note with the Community Mass, which once again united the St John’s College community in tradition and reflection and the blessing of the new Heads, Mr Dale Jackson and Ms Noluthando Nkuna. We celebrated outstanding academic achievement, with Siza Gule, Head of School 2025, and his Second Prefect, Menzi Gule, accepted to Harvard University through the Early Action Programme.
Old Johannian, Benjamin Willem, (Thomson 1997) has established himself as a world-class composer.
On the edge of Burger Field, just under the Owen Nkumane Terrace, there is a small cleft carved out of the hillside, and in the middle of this stands an old, stone fountain. Until recently, the fountain was dry and faint markings were etched into the stone wall around it.
