Trinity Term 2025 has been one of celebration, remembrance, and outstanding achievement. It is a time when the rhythm of College life is both reflective and vibrant, and this edition of College Life captures many of the moments that made this term so memorable.
We congratulated The Revd Dr Matthew Wright and Dr Mike Boyd on their recent doctorates, bringing the total number of doctorates at the College to ten, a proud milestone. We honoured the legacy of Mr Alan ‘Takkie’ Wilcock, the 13th Headmaster of St John’s College, at a moving Requiem Mass. We also enjoyed the return of one of our major choral works, Vivaldi’s Gloria - a highlight of the cultural calendar that once again upliftedaudiences through music and collaboration. We also welcomed back generations of Old Johannians for Gaudy Day, a day filled with heritage, camaraderie, and community spirit.
Our students continue to represent St John’s across a range of disciplines. Highlights this term include PEAK, the Senior Rock Band, winning the Redhill Battle of the Bands; Billy Cronje and Liam Batley receiving their Junior Springbok blazers; and College students Siza Gule (Head of School), Michael van Heerden (Head of Fleming), and Sixth Former Boris Daley being interviewed on YFM’s The Lunch League to speak about youth leadership and student voice.
On Mandela Day, our Johannian community gathered on Burger Field to create a striking image of Nelson Mandela from over 8 000 donated cans of food. This reflected our shared spirit of generosity and commitment to service.
These moments, and so many others, reflect the depth and diversity of College life. We are proud to share them with you and invite you to journey with us through the stories that follow.
Peter Wright, Deputy Head
