Cape Town OJ Drinks Get-together

Cape Town OJ Drinks Get-together

A superbly organised gathering of Cape Town based Old Johannians was held at Newlands Cricket Ground’s, Long Room on Wednesday 20 September 2017. Old Johannians had come together to meet each other, some for the first time, and others for the umpteenth time. I was blown away by not just the interest shown in the event but more so, the actual turnout itself.

It was clearly evident that the Old Johannian following down in Cape Town is not only alive, but too hungry for opportunity to get together and share their love for being an Old Johannian.

I was fortunate to meet OJs who matriculated from our school in years before my own parents had been born and what this proved to me upon meeting these OJs who completed their matric 1954, ’55 and’56 respectively, was that there was still an immense amount of pride associated in being an Old Johannian.

The newly appointed Regional Committee in Cape Town will be doing their utmost to bring all Cape Town based OJs together on a more frequent basis, and we urge all of those in the region to please make sure that your contact details are up to date in order to allow ourselves to communicate notice of future gatherings.

A massive amount of thanks must go to the following people for orchestrating the evening and for bringing us all together. First and foremost, Nick Jeffrey who has been the OJ Regional Rep. for the past few years, thank you for arranging everything from start to finish pertaining to the event at Newlands Cricket Ground and also for being the flag bearer of the OJA for the years gone by.

Thanks too to Paul Edey (Headmaster of St Johns College), Patrick Lees (Headmaster of the Prep School), Sarah Lees (Sixth Form Secretary), Kate Byrne (Head of Sixth Form) and Damian Boyce (OJA Chairman) for making the trip down to bear witness to Cape Town’s rejuvenated OJ following.

Lastly and definitely not least, thank you to the Cape Town OJs who showed up that evening. It is an honour and a sincere privilege to be your Regional Committee Chairman, and I look forward to seeing each one of you at our next gathering, where we will continue to move Forward in Faith, together.
