12th Breakfast Event

12th OJA Eminent Speaker Breakfast Event with Adv. Kevin Sifiso Malunga

Guest speaker: Deputy Public Protector Adv. Kevin Sifiso Malunga

Topic:The power of integrity in career dynamics – some thoughts for the public and private sectors

The OJA is focused on creating a platform through which OJs can get together, reconnect, and network on a business level.  We aim to create regular events that will allow OJs from similar or different industries to come together.  These events have no fundraising element and are purely networking functions. The last 11 events since our launch in October 2013 were a great success.

Background on the speaker:

Adv. Malunga has been Deputy Public Protector of the Republic of South Africa since December 2012.He holds a BA Law from the University of Swaziland.  He also acquired an LLB degree from the University of Natal in South Africa and an LLM in International Law from Georgetown University Law Centre in Washington DC.

Adv. Malunga, is a member of several legal professional societies.  His most recent contributions include serving as State Law Adviser to the Marikana Judicial Commission of Inquiry.Adv. Malunga also served as a State Law Adviser: Policy Co-ordination and Monitoring at the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.

He has also served in the former and current Chief Justice’s office, where he was also an interim Chief of Staff. Adv. Malunga was also a part-time researcher/consultant to UNAIDS on international and domestic laws affecting HIV vaccine trialists in Ethiopia. In December 2010 he was appointed by the Minister of Higher Education and Training Dr Blade Nzimande to serve as a Board member of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) for a period of five years.

His passion for human rights, fairness, equity and justice is well known by most who have interacted with him.

OJA feedback:

Adv. Malunga generously made the time to come and speak to a group of eager OJs as well as stay for the Breakfast.

Approximately 70 OJs were able to attend the event and were lucky enough to gain some insight into the mind of a man who is tasked with the unenviable task of, amongst other things, strengthening constitutional democracy by investigating and redressing improper and prejudicial conduct, maladministration and abuse of power in state affairs.

This is clearly a topic which is quite pertinent in the current political climate in South Africa.

Adv. Malunga has been the Deputy Public Protector of the Republic of South Africa since December 2012. He holds a BA Law from the University of Swaziland. He also acquired an LLB degree from the University of Natal in South Africa and an LLM in International Law from Georgetown University Law Centre in Washington DC. It goes without saying that he is a very impressive man who is much respected.

Adv. Malunga spoke on ‘The power of integrity in career dynamics -some thoughts for the public and private sectors’. In future the OJA will ensure that more time is allocated for attendee interaction at events such as these.  It was clear that the attendees were extremely eager to gain some insight into the ongoing task of the public protector’s office. The OJA will also undertake to keep the speakers at these events relevant and informative at all times.

We encourage all Old Johannians to join us at these breakfasts, if you would like to be invited please can you send an email to info@oja.co.za.
