Remembrance Day Service – 9 November 2017

09/11/2017 @ 7:20 AM - 9:00 AM

“Gas! Gas! Quick, boys!

An ecstasy of fumbling, fitting the clumsy helmets just in time; But someone still was yelling out and stumbling and flound’ring like a man in fire or lime …”

Although Wilfred Owen (“Dulce et decorum est”) was describing the horrors of the First World War, all wars known to humankind are the same. Men and women die. Military personnel, innocent civilians: people on both sides.

The First World War officially ended at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Since then, this moment has been commemorated annually to remember all members of armed forces who died in the line of duty. This day, referred to as Poppy Day, Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, will once again be observed by St John’s College to honour the sixty Old Johannians who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War, as well as those who fell in the Second World War.

Thursday 9 November from 07:20 – 08:45 in the College Memorial Chapel

A Mass for the departed will be held with the full St John’s choir, including the Old Johannian choir. In keeping with tradition, the Russian Contakion will be included in the service, as well as the sounding of the Last Post. All Old Johannians, parents, veterans, family members, and former national servicemen are encouraged to attend. Please wear your medaIs, e.g. ProPatria as well as medals or ribbons of family members who are unable to attend.
